David Monaghan
aka Monty

A native of Navan, County Meath, Monty came to America for a six-week holiday…14 years ago. His interest in traditional Irish music was first inspired in his hometown by the late Harry Gillick, a fiddle player of wide local renown. Although Monty began playing the Mandolin at the advanced age of 18, he has rarely put "Mandy" down since.

In 1985, along with singer/guitar player Eamonn Sheehan, he started Heather Breeze, one of the most successful bands ever to perform on New York's Irish circuit. He has since toured and/or recorded with such well-known acts as New Image, Morning Star, the Bord Na Monas, Four to the Bar, The McCabes, fast-rising Irish singer Orla, and now, Seanchai & the Unity Squad.

A chance meeting in the Catskills in September of 1999 snagged Monty an invitation to sit in with Seanchai for a single song. One thing led to another, and he's been sitting in ever since…

Monty is currently working on recording projects with jazz sax great, Doug White (Juniper Records) and record producer, Oliver Sweeny of Crossborder Media.
